We are a local, non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for parks, recreation, and vibrant public spaces in Sitka, Alaska. Founded by passionate community members, SRF serves as a bridge for community members, businesses, and partners to invest financially and through volunteering into the health and wellness of our residents.
-
Our Mission: To support and enhance the quality of life in Sitka by facilitating financial and human investments in diverse recreational opportunities.
Our Vision: A thriving, sustainable community recreation ecosystem that is affordable, accessible, and equitable for all Sitka residents and guests. We aim to connect people of all generations through dynamic indoor and outdoor environments.
-
No, we are an independent non-profit organization, but we work in close alignment and partnership with the City and Borough of Sitka Parks and Recreation Division.
While the city manages day-to-day operations, maintenance, and facility rentals, the Foundation steps in to advocate for recreational spaces, secure funding for specialized projects, and champion long-term infrastructure improvements that might fall outside the city’s standard budget. For example, we currently partner directly with the city to help develop and finalize Sitka's Parks and Recreation Master Plan.
-
We focus on tangible improvements that make active living easier and more fun for everyone. A few examples of past and ongoing support include:
Purchasing major equipment (like a 12-passenger van for Parks & Rec youth programs and a gymnastics airfloor).
Providing scholarships for youth to ensure financially accessible programs to all families.
Acquiring outdoor recreation gear for community use.
Partnering with community groups like SCORE (Sitkans for Community Outdoor Recreation Enhancement) to revitalize outdoor athletic infrastructure.
-
We believe that a community with robust, accessible recreation opportunities is a healthier, happier, and more connected place to live. Recreation isn't just about sports; it’s about youth development, mental wellness for all ages, maintaining a diverse workforce, and creating public spaces that make Sitka a beautiful, inviting place for generations to come.
-
There are several ways to bring "people power" to our mission:
Donate: Financial contributions go directly toward community projects, equipment purchases, and youth scholarships.
Volunteer: We are always looking for hands-on help with community outreach, fundraising events, and special projects.
Lead: Consider stepping into a leadership role or joining a committee to help shape the future of Sitka's recreational spaces.
